'Sonic Postcards is a UK wide education project devised and delivered by Sonic Arts Network. It is a unique and innovative project that enables 9-14 year old pupils from across the UK to explore and compare their local sound environments through the exchange of sound postcards with other schools via the internet. The project focuses on the impact of sound on our lives and the possibilities for creativity through the manipulation of sound with technology. As with an ordinary postcard, it offers the opportunity for people to exchange information about their local environments providing windows into a variety of places, lives and cultures, from urban to rural, suburban to coastal'.

Although I received a press pack of printed postcards with accompanying CD of pupils soundscapes it is actually the web site that is the hub of the project. Here you will find all the information needed to produce a sonic postcard from audio already uploaded to the site or a teachers pack that includes a template, worksheets as well as guidelines on the relevant curriculum links. In addition to this there are free software downloads like Audition to manipulate field recordings as well as sound toys in which to play with sound you upload to the site.

The soundscapes on the accompanying CD and press pack are a great insight into the variety of locations and environments that have been recorded by students and I was pleasantly surprised by their quality and depth. From London to Aberdeenshire you really get a sense of place from each audio clip which will only be further enhanced by the proposed international extension of the project. As mentioned somewhere else on the site there are echoes of R. Murray Schafers' Handbook for Acoustic Ecology and the World Soundscape Project which is an excellent reference point for young people to be aware of at this stage in their lives.

Whether you are an educationalist or just into in new sound projects Sonic Postcards will definitely be of interest. Not only does it draw attention to local sound environments but is a great resource in connecting creative learning through listening.
