It has been over a year since Midori Hirano released her debut ep Poet At The Piano and it has certainly been too long for many here at Furthernoise. As a taster the ep was a delicious entre to to a greater piece of work and her new debut album Lush Rush will undoubtdley dissapoint few. The orchestration, is as the albums title implies LUSH... with beautiful violin, cello, & piano melodies voicing a single developing arpegiated theme in varying key's, rhythms & circumstances. This could have the possibility of becomming monotonous but is remidied by Midori feeding in textures of field recordings and understated beats, sometimes processed or as in my favourite Ancient Story In The Room with a well recorded acoustic drum kit. Here the drums punctuate the ambience of the track with a building rhythm that becomes quite anthemic and is in nice contrast to the subtle vocal melody that weaves in and out, hinting at an old rooms contained memories. It is also the first time we have heard Midori sing and we definitely want more !!!!

As with much of Reich's music employing this device of a single developing motiff over a number of tracks is an engaging format and there is also some great use of space within the stereo spectrum particularly on Leaving, which uses igniting matches as a rhythm panned from left to right. Here she also plays a Kalimba, which is the only time I have heard Midori include a traditional Japanese instrument and a great addition to the sonic colour of the album.

Lush Rush has a very melodic ambient dynamic and is a plesurable listening experience. If occasionally I felt she could have squeezed a little more light & shade out the compositions I would preface this by not wanting to change too much what Midori Hirano has developed into a very distinctive compositional style. Lush Rush is out on Tokyo's Noble-Label who are releasing some really interesting material all available through their website.
