El Pato are a Bristol based 7 piece band who's music spans a multiplicity of genres and styles. 'Making music for the world, not for pigeon holes' is their mantra and it is a pretty interesting hybrid. A mixture of Spanish, Senegalese, Zimbabwean & European music's, integrating punk, ska & dub influences with a real lo fi sensibility, you could occasionally be forgiven for thinking that you weren't actually listening to some original studio 1 recordings. With each members country of origin reading like a Lonely Planet guide book, they inadvertently met in Bristol and began honing their sound at the infamous Prince of Wales pub in St Pauls. This of course is a great story and really illustrates the general vibe of their music. With a distinctively live sound, 'Repatriation' definitely stands out in combining a driving dub bass, lose rhythmic groove, dirty as you like horn arrangements and a vocal that could be early Horace Andy but retaining an originality that is of it's own. Track two, 'Yarabi' features a North African vocal over a dub inspired rhythm section and horns illustrating once again the diversity of their sound. There are more tracks on their web site which are free to download, the pick being 'El Pato' which sounds like it is recorded live and has a looseness and abandonment that the more I hear of them is what they are making heart their sound. Their live shows are purportedly wild affairs and with the festival season upon us I imagine it won't be to hard to catch them in full flow.
