In Association with Newcastle Science Festival 2006 and Furthernoise.org
In January 2006, a unique creative opportunity was announced to the North-East's universities – a call for Music and Art based on the theme of climate change. Realising the inspirational quality of the call and the fact that this wasn't just a regional concern, David JC de la Haye requested Newcastle University allowed him to open the call out to a wider audience so that others may voice their concerns through their chosen medium. And, perhaps more importantly, have their voices heard. Since then it has become the focus of attention for many visual and audio artists worldwide.
What this endeavour has amounted to is a compilation CD featuring the works of 10 artists, spanning from Lithuania to Austria through the UK to Vancouver. Themes covered take a trajectory that focuses not only on the affects apparent in our surroundings, from the devastation of forestry to the concern over the state of the arctic caps, but also the affects incurred upon ourselves as humans.
Over 40 entries were received, so narrowing down the selection has been a problematic task, especially taking into consideration that an 80 minute disc doesn't provide a great deal of space to house the often lengthy journeys of the electroacoustic style pieces. Other works include chopped up glitch-ambient, pristine field recordings of threatened environments and edgy spoken word, the overall result being mixed into a sleek package that seamlessly examines an assortment of experimental styles.
It is a shame that the release didn't manage to get pressed in its originally proposed format of CD-ROM, which would have allowed the visual entries to be included. Nonetheless, the effort gone into these works hasn't been forgotten – rumour has it that a future event is being planned that intends to exhibit these visual works, along with some live performances and artwork from Art Not Oil amongst others…
Curiously, an area that has been noticeably overlooked amongst all of the entries is the electronic composer's intrinsic links to technological usage, energy consumption and their use of materials. It would have been an interesting undertaking to try and create a piece bearing these conditions in mind. Maybe next time…
Furthernoise will be showcasing the entire album on Resonance FM on March 27th from 7-8pm as well as playlisting it on our audio player over the coming weeks.
